Transportation on Arrival

South Africa's Transport System

The public transport system in South Africa is made up of the following main modes of transport: the traditional commuter rail system, new Gautrain high-speed rail between Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Oliver Tambo International Airport;  commuter bus systems present in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, minibus-taxies, taxi cabs and Uber.

Although present, public transportation is at times not very reliable an alternative to public transport would be Car rental / Car hire.  It is important to note that most car rental agencies in South Africa require a credit card in order to rent a car.

Getting Around in Stellenbosch

Students and staff who live and work on the central campus, can walk to their destinations via safe pedestrian routes, or otherwise cycle there. The campus shuttle service will also be available along specific routes. The environment already lends itself to these transport modes since various traffic calming mechanisms are in place, e.g. raised pedestrian crossings. Heavy vehicles crossing the campus, excluding those doing deliveries at the University, will be discouraged. There are a number of bicycle rental and sale options in town, and the University also has some bicycles for rent:
