The Military Academy had its Welcoming Parade for the first year learners (MA26) on 2 February 2024 at the Military Academy parade ground.  The Welcoming Parade marks the start to the beginning of the year for the Military Academy, and first year learners got their first taste of events to come at the unit.  The unit had the privilege of having the General Officer Commanding Training Command, Major General S.G. Hlongwa, in attendance and the parade was led by the SA Army Band from Youngsfield.

After inspection of the parade, the Commandant, Brigadier General Cassie de Castro welcomed all members back from leave.  He extended a special word of welcome to the first years to this prestigious unit and emphasized the privilege to study at such a unit and create friendships for life.

In his speech, Brigadier General de Castro mentioned that 2023 has been a very busy year for the unit, but that he was immensely proud of everything that the unit achieved and are looking forward to continuing with the successes in 2024.  He also expressed his appreciation for the partnership with the University of Stellenbosch, through the Faculty of Military Science, who supported the unit in more than one way and are continuing to do so.

As part of the parade, Dean of Faculty Military Science, Professor Samuel Tshehla, read the Military Academy Code of Honour to the students and the Commandant and Dean the issued a Code of Honour to each first year on parade. This should serve as a guideline for them to complete their studies successfully.

After the parade, all members gathered in the Joe Modise Hall for the Academic Opening of 2024.  Prof Tshehla, on behalf of the rector of Stellenbosch University, was the guest speaker and highlighted the high standard of the Faculty of Military Science teaching and learning and emphasize the great opportunity provided to each first year to be at the unit.

The day was concluded with a tea at the Military Academy Combined Club, where members also celebrated the birthdays of the Commandant and the Dean.
