SU announces latest group of distinguished professors

In pursuit of Stellenbosch University's (SU) commitment to academic excellence and in recognition of SU academics who have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their university careers, the institution has conferred the title of Distinguished Professor upon a group of 37 academics from across nine faculties. The group includes new appointments as well as re-appointments. Read more here

Continent-wide honour for meat scientist Dr Mapiye

​Meat scientist Dr Cletos Mapiye of the Department of Animal Sciences at Stellenbosch University is one of three scientists from the African continent who have been recognised with a 2020 Young African Researchers Award for the authenticity and quality of their scientific research. The awards are allocated by the Arab Republic of Egypt's Academy of Scientific Research and Technology to young researchers from the African continent. Read more here

Two Stellenbosch professors win Montias prize

Two professors from the Department of Economics' LEAP group, Dieter von Fintel and Johan Fourie, won the 2020 Montias Award for the best paper published in the Journal of Comparative Economics over the past two years. Read more here
 

International visiting scholarship awarded to Mawethu Nyakatya

Stellenbosch University (SU) staff member Mawethu Nyakatya was recently awarded with the international Visiting Professor of Community-Engaged Scholarship at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in the USA. Read more here

Research Chair in the Internet of Things encourages interdisciplinary collaboration

Prof Deresh Ramjugernath appointed as SU's new Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Learning and Teaching

Prof Deresh Ramjugernath (48), Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), is the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Learning and Teaching at Stellenbosch University (SU). The SU Council appointed Ramjugernath in the position at its meeting on 21 September 2020. Read more here
 

SU soil experts win international award for book on sustainable soil preparation

A book by two Stellenbosch University soil scientists that provides tips on how the grape industry can ensure sustainable soil preparation has been internationally recognized by the vitivinicultural wine publishing world. It was written by Dr Johan van Zyl, an extraordinary professor in soil science in the Faculty of AgriSciences, and Dr Eduard Hoffman of the SU Department of Soil Science. Read more here

SU building data science capability in Africa
“South Africa and the continent of Africa has a lot to teach the rest of the world. We have a very young and intelligent population. It is a unique place where Data Science can be used to create opportunities for Africa and outside Africa that will help to better lives.”

This was the message from Prof Kanshukan Rajaratnam, Director: School for Data Science and Computational Thinking, who delivered the keynote presentation at a recent online talk hosted by Stellenbosch University International. Read more here
