External Bursaries

 All other bursaries and bursary loans administered by SU are managed in accordance with the specific conditions and criteria as set by the donors. These bursaries and bursary loans are allocated by the staff of the Centre for Undergraduate Bursaries and Loans, these allocations are verified by the University's auditors for compliance with the donor conditions, as are all other bursary awards. Students are encouraged to apply for financial assistance within the specified timeframe (1 May – 31 August of the previous year),
to be eligible to be nominated for other funding.

ISFAP Funding​


The Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme (ISFAP) was established as a funding model to sustainably cater for the higher education costs of South Africa's poor and 'missing middle' students. 

Criteria for eligibility includes:

  • Studying towards a degree for the first time in 2022.
  • Annual family income of between R0 and R600 000.
  • Conditional acceptance at SU for one of the following programmes which may possibly be funded at SU in 2022: BEng, BAcc, BCom (Financial Accounting), BCom (Management Accounting), BCom (Management Sciences), BCom (Economic Sciences), BCom (Mathematical Sciences), BCom (Actuarial Science), BSc in Food Science, BSc in Earth Science and MBChB.

Department of Labour Bursaries ​


Students with disabilities qualify for (apart from any other bursaries) for bursaries from the Department of Labour and are required to apply directly at the Department for these bursaries.


 Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme


The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme to promote teaching as a profession. Bursaries are available to enable eligible students to complete a teaching qualification in an area of national priority. Recipients of the bursary must apply
online for the bursary in every year. The recipient must also complete the placement information as required in every year.

The bursary is offered annually via an application process. ​

The amount includes tuition fees, university residence or private accommodation costs, study/learning material, meals/living allowances  as well as teaching practice allowance where applicable.

The yearly award for 2021 is R113 750​. ​
