Strengthening health systems across Africa and Asia

The Faculty is participating in the African Regional Capacity Development for Health Services and Systems Research, or ARCADE, funded by the European Union. It is coordinated by Karolinska Institute in Sweden, with SU and the Makerere University in Uganda as hub institutions in Africa. The three institutions have signed memorandums of understanding to offer joint PhD degrees in health sciences.

ARCADE uses innovative educational technology to strengthen postgraduate training collaboration in health research across Africa and Asia. Focusing on doctoral and postdoctoral training, the partner institutions develop cutting-edge online courses, blended learning modules and joint programmes that will enable the training of researchers in low- and middle- income countries who might not otherwise have access to such material.

A multidisciplinary team from SU is involved in developing the joint PhD programme. Other partners include the Institute of Development Studies at Sussex University; Malawi University; Muhimbili University in Tanzania, and the Norwegian Knowledge Institute for Health Services.

SU also participated in the successful submission of a similar collaborative proposal for an ARCADE project in Asia, which will focus on research capacity development around social determinants of health.

The Asia ARCADE is led by Tanjing Medical School in the Peoples Republic of China, and commenced in November 2011.
