Occupational Therapy
Welcome to Stellenbosch University

Division of Occupational Therapy

Opportunity and ability to participate in the daily activities and occupations that are important to us is essential for our health, development, our sense of well-being, and for meeting our needs. Occupational therapists work alongside people of all ages – from premature babies through to older adults – who do not have the opportunity to participate or are unable to do the activities or occupations they want and need to do. Some of our clients experience illness or injury that affect their ability to perform activities temporarily. Others live in restrictive environments that hinder or prevent participation in work, leisure, learning, social interaction, play or community living, thus resulting in disability.

The focus of occupational therapy is on developing enabling and empowering partnerships with our clients, so that they are able to do the activities that are essential for survival and that are meaningful to them in the context of their daily lives.

There are many exciting job opportunities in a variety of environments for trained occupational therapists. Occupational therapists work in hospitals, private practice, community clinics, industry, schools for children with special needs, rehabilitation centres, old age homes, non-governmental organisations.

The Division of Occupational Therapy at Stellenbosch University offers a variety of courses from a Bachelors in Occupational Therapy through to PhD level research. We are also involved in research in a number of different practice areas. We engage in a number of different projects with communities across the Western Cape, to promote health and well-being through occupational participation.
