Research area: Financial decision-making

The South African population is characterised by unprecedented low savings rates which often result in unsustainably high debt levels and the risk of falling in the debt trap. Despite the individual’s predicament, such undesirable financial behaviours have the further adverse implication of crippling the economy and putting pressure on state funds. Policymakers have mainly used traditional educational methods to improve the knowledge of the general population about financial concepts, products, and markets based on the belief that poor financial decision-making is due to lack of information and the expectation that improved knowledge will change behaviour. The plausibility of whether financial information alone is enough to change financial behaviour and enable consumers to make wise financial decisions have been called into question by many scholars. Also, there seems to be little research on identifying factors that relate to responsible financial behaviour with respect to savings and debt. Understanding consumer behaviour with respect to saving/spending in a responsible manner is of central concern to policymakers, as it could better align financial literacy programme initiatives to accomplish responsible financial behaviour and the goal of restoring the financial wellbeing of society.
