 Rika van den Berg

Rika van den Berg, a doctoral student in the Department of Psychology at Stellenbosch Univevrsity, passed away on 1 September 2014.  She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer six weeks before her death.  Rika was a respected clinical psychologist in Cape Town (a UCT graduate) who worked in private practice and community settings, and was key to the establishment of psychodynamic couples therapy in South Africa.  She was on the editorial board of the accredited scholarly journal Psycho-Analytic Psychotherapy in South Africa.  She was very close to completing a doctorate using attachment theory to understand contemporary white Afrikaner masculinity.  This was boundary-breaking and highly original work. Rika was 58 years old and is survived by her husband, Brian Papas, and her stepchildren Pascal and Matthew, as well as by her mother, her brothers and sister and their families.  She will be missed and warmly remembered by her many friends, professional and academic colleagues, supervisees and clients.  It was a privilege to have a student of this calibre in our department.
