Admission requirements
For admission into the DPhil programme in Psychology a masters degree in Psychology, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University, is required. In addition, admission into the programme depends on an approved research proposal.

Programme structure and contents
The doctoral programme in psychology, which requires a minimum of two years of study, focuses on the broadening of knowledge in a specific area of Psychology, the development of advanced research skills, and on generating new knowledge in that particular field of Psychology.

The programme (240 credits) entails the development of a research proposal, execution of the research and reporting the study in a dissertation, under supervision of a promoter. It is preferable that the study, of which the topic is determined in consultation with the promoter, forms part of an existing departmental research project and, where possible, focuses on a psychosocial problem within the South African context.

The dissertation may be written in Afrikaans or English. On completion of the dissertation and in consultation with the promoter, students are required to prepare one or more papers for publication based on their research.

The dissertation is examined according to the University's regulations for the examination of doctoral dissertations as stipulated in the section on advanced degrees in Part 1 of the Prospectus.
