MPhil in Applied Ethics (Business Ethics)

The MPhil in Applied Ethics (specialisation: Business Ethics) is a one year degree consisting of both a structured class component, and a research component. The focus of the degree is on the ethical issues that characterise the current economic and business environment, as well as the unique challenges that face Africa and South Africa, in particular.

The programme is designed to equip professionals in government, business, non-governmental organisations, and community-based organisations with the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to successfully address moral issues in their fields of expertise.

The broad themes covered in the programme include:

  • Business ethics and its basis
  • Corporations and corporate social responsibility
  • Ethics and corporate governance
  • Corporations and moral agency
  • Sustainability
  • The duties and responsibilities of multinational corporations
  • Leadership ethics
  • Ethics in the organisation
  • Business ethics in the African context

The requirements for the degree are as follows: students must attend two week-long contact sessions held in Stellenbosch (one at the beginning of the year and one in the middle of the year); complete two assignments, an exam, and a presentation (which, together, count 50% of the final mark); and complete a thesis (which counts 50% of the final mark).
