More about Primrose Charmz:

Primrose Charmz is a self-taught surface pattern designer and multi-disciplinary artist based in Cape Town. She obtained an undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2020, Primrose started designing cultural artworks and patterns to visually narrate and celebrate aspects of the rich heritage and history of communities and cultural groups based in Africa. Some of Primrose's patterns have been showcased on products and surfaces in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. She made her debut as a professional artist in 2021 when she participated in the “Women from Africa in the arts" virtual exhibition hosted by Color Me Africa Fine Arts, an arts organisation based in Chicago, USA.

Together building a unified and inclusive brand for Stellenbosch University:

Developing our new brand positioning and visual identity is one of the most visible institutional strategic initiatives that Stellenbosch University has embarked on in recent years. Having created a stronger, coherent brand, we are better equipped to achieve our Vision 2040 and move forward together.

In April 2021, SU Council approved a new brand identity for the University that had entailed extensive stakeholder engagement, consultation and decision-making processes.

Given this approval, a phased and responsible roll-out ensued, which included elements essential to the implementation of a consistent and distinctive visual identity. The “Forward Together" pattern forms part of the new visual identity and is used to represent the coming together of different cultures at Stellenbosch University. It was designed to echo the rhythm of the linework in the University's logo and adds texture and movement in our visual language.

As part of the next phase of the rebrand implementation, a key focus area for 2023 is renewing the graduation attire to reflect a coherent message of SU's commitment to excellence, inclusivity and innovation in pursuit of its Vision 2040. As part of this process, Stellenbosch University's Branding Unit is launching an engagement project where Stellenbosch artists, students, staff and alumni will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop to develop patterns that will be used on various media, including printed formats, digital media and on the new academic attire.
