The International Council of Museums (ICOM) annually commemorates 18 May as International Museum Day. The theme for 2022 is 'The Power of Museums'.

'Museums have the power to transform the world around us. As incomparable places of discovery, — two essential steps in building a better future.'(Source: https://imd.icom.museum/international-museum-day-2022/the-theme-the-power-of-museums/)

According to ICOM, the goal of International Museum Day 2022 is 'to explore the potential of museums to bring about positive change in their communities'.

The focus this year is on three interrelated themes, namely the power of achieving sustainability, the power of innovating on digitalisation and accessibility; and the power of community building through education.

To commemorate International Museum Day 2022, the Stellenbosch University Museum will present various public and educational activities throughout the month of May.

On 12 May, the Museum will host a discussion featuring Prof Ciraj Rassool of the University of the Western Cape, Prof Peter Probst from the Tufts University in Boston, and Prof George Abungu – Emeritus Director‑General of Museums in Kenya. This online discussion will be moderated by Dr Geraldine Frieslaar – Curator of Research, Dialogue and Social Justice – under the theme: African Museums: The Question of the Museum and the National.

On 17 May, the African Drumming Tuesdays will offer students, staff and community members around Stellenbosch an opportunity to acquire the skills of playing an African drum. A local drummer from Kayamandi, Vuyo Mgijima, will be hosting the drumming sessions. According to Vuyo, “playing the African drum is highly relaxing and therapeutic, relieving stress and nurturing creativity. It is also very good for increasing performance in the workplace and building team spirit and social cohesion".

On 18 May, Ulrich Wolff, Curator of the SU Museum will present a Wednesday Art Walkabout and talk about the value of museums. The aim of the programme presented on the first Wednesday of every month is to educate and share the Museum's art collections with the public.

The Museum is also privileged to be hosting an art exhibition entitled Finding Refuge by Ruth Carneson. This exhibition will be opened on 21 May by means of a discussion between Lionel Davis, Ruth Carneson and Deirdre Prins-Solani. Ruth's book will also be available for sale at the event.

At fourteen, Ruth Carneson left South Africa on her own, clutching her teddy bear in one hand and a roll of her drawings in the other. In the UK, she struggled to reconstruct a life fractured by fear, but found much-needed refuge in artmaking. Her creativity helped her deal with the trauma of growing up in apartheid South Africa, where her parents had been harassed and imprisoned. In 1991, it was possible for Ruth to return home to South Africa. For ten years she lived on Robben Island where she continued to make art. On Robben Island, Ruth found a safe place, a place that she could call home. Her art has been both a refuge and a way of making sense of the world.
