Presenters

Prof Ciraj Rassool

Ciraj Rassool is Senior Professor of History at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), where he also teaches Museum and Heritage Studies and Curatorship. Among his latest publications are The Politics of Heritage in Africa: Economies, Histories and Infrastructures, co-edited with Derek Peterson and KodzoGavua; Rethinking Empire in Southern Africa, co-edited with Dag Henrichsen, Giorgio Miescher and Lorena Rizzo; and Unsettled History: Making South African Public Pasts co-authored with Leslie Witz and Gary Minkley. He served on the boards of the District Six Museum, Iziko Museums of South Africa, the South African Heritage Resources Agency and the National Heritage Council. He has previously chaired the Scientific Committee of the International Council of African Museums (AFRICOM). He was recently appointed to the new SA National Advisory Board for Restitution and Repatriation.

Prof Peter Probst

Peter Probst is Professor of Art History and Anthropology at Tufts University in Boston where he directs the Museums, Memory, and Heritage programme. He is the author and editor of several books, including National Museums of Africa, Osogbo and the Art of Heritage, Kalumbas Fest and African Modernities. His latest book, What is African Art? A Short History, is being published by the University of Chicago Press in December 2022.

Prof George Abungu

George Abungu is a Cambridge-trained archaeologist and Emeritus Director-General of the National Museums of Kenya. He has been a guest scholar at the Getty Conservation Institute and Getty Research Institute, and a visiting professor in numerous universities worldwide. He is a recipient of the Ife Prize in Museology (2007); the Distinction of “Passeur du Patrimoine" (2009); and a Lifetime Achievement in Defense of Art (2012). He has published works on archaeology, heritage management, illicit trafficking in heritage, restitution, museology, and heritage and sustainable development. He is a fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies, Stellenbosch University, and is the founding Professor of Heritage Studies, University of Mauritius.
