The Division for Research Development (DRD) Presents: Research Indaba Series

Topic: Research Integrity (Dr Nicola Barsdorf)

This session will include a short presentation by Stellenbosch University's Research Integrity Officer (RIO), which will provide an introduction to research integrity and why it is important, outline various breaches of research norms and standards and highlight Stellenbosch University's policies & procedures relevant to Research Integrity. Thereafter the floor will be open for discussion. We encourage participants to use this opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the SU support structures in place for research integrity as well as to raise research integrity questions/challenges and to share experiences and opinions on research integrity matters. We trust that this will provide a platform for dynamic discussions!

Nicola Barsdorf, MHS, PhD is currently the Research Integrity Officer (RIO) for Stellenbosch University (SU). Her role includes formulating and revising policies and procedures to govern responsible conduct of research, promoting and raising awareness of responsible conduct of research, receiving any allegations of breach of research norms and standards at SU and initiating and coordinating the procedure for investigating any such allegations, and representing the university on external research integrity and research ethics forums.

She is a former Fogarty Bioethics scholar and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bioethics Fellow. She has been actively involved in research ethics for the last 20 years and is passionate about research ethics capacity strengthening in Africa. Nicola has served as an expert consultant to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the NIAID Division of AIDS on the ethics of HIV prevention and vaccine trials. She continues to consult on and teach research ethics to researchers and REC members from across Africa on behalf of SU and as a faculty member of SARETI (South African Research Ethics Training Initiative).

She has served on SU's Senate Research Ethics Committee and on several of the institution's Research Ethics Committees over the last 10 years.
