Balancing SoTL & disciplinary research

In February's Auxin with Prof Susan van Schalkwyk we discussed the various roles of academics.  Robbie picks up on that point of the lecturers' multiple roles: “The opportunity we have to investigate the landscape of learning and student development can easily be missed when our focus is our subject research. But perhaps this discussion will demonstrate that one does not have to choose; one can balance teaching in a scholarly way and subject-specific research.

“In this Auxin presentation I will share a discussion of my own journey in higher education, and how I have moved from being a 'technician of education', to a 'scholar of education', while simultaneously pursuing a full programme of subject research.

“I will draw on examples of the application of the scholarship of teaching and learning by my colleagues and I in the Department of Process Engineering to make a case for subject-focused researchers to consider their teaching, consider their postgraduate supervision, and indulge their inquisitive minds here."

A/Prof Robbie Pott,  Senior Lecturer:  Department of Process Engineering

Robbie Pott is an associate professor in the Department of Process Engineering at SU. He completed his undergraduate in chemical engineering at UCT, before heading to Cambridge, UK, to read for his PhD combining skills in engineering and molecular biology. Upon completion he gave up the pubs and cold weather of the UK to return to UCT for a short stint as a postdoctoral student, where he helped develop an algal-based blue food colouring replacement. He joined Stellenbosch University in 2015, and has grown a productive research group in bioprocess engineering, with excellent postgraduate researchers. He received the SU Teaching Excellence Award in the Developing Teacher category in 2019. His subject research focuses on developing novel bioprocesses for industrial application, while his teaching research concerns grit and success in postgraduate students, and the link between theory and practice in undergraduate students.
