The engaging lecture will take a look at the two Stellenbosch fires started by slaves in 1710 and 1803 respectively, and their impact on the architectural heritage of the Cape.

DATE: 19 February 2020

TIME: 18:00

VENUE: SU Museum, 52 Ryneveld Street

When someone shouts “Fire!", a frantic scramble ensues. This was something the colonists at the Cape were all too familiar with. Two extensive fires ravished old Stellenbosch in 1710 and 1803. Slaves were involved in both instances. The fires not only had a significant impact on the Cape architecture, but also jeopardised social relations between slave and master. The lecture provides a synoptic overview and multi-faceted comparison of these fires. The conclusion as to how the events affected the Cape architectural heritage promises to surprise.

The lecture will be the first in a four-part series exploring the impact of natural disasters on our architectural heritage.

Admission is free, but space is limited. Contact Natasha Coltman (021 808 3691 or ncoltman@sun.ac.za) to reserve your seat.

Refreshments will be served after the lecture.
