Our last speaker for the year is Prof Mike Bruton, author of the first comprehensive biography about two extraordinary South African scientists, JLB and Margaret Smith. The Fishy Smiths: a biography of JLB and Margaret Smith traces their formative years and serendipitous meeting, leading up to the discovery of the coelacanth in 1939, and the tumultuous years that followed. It is a story “awash with adventure, travel, discovery, risk-taking, near-death experiences – and their extraordinary contribution to science".

Science Café Stellenbosch is an initiative of SU's Faculty of Science to encourage the discussion of scientific issues in a language that everyone can understand. Entrance is free.
