The Mathematics Division in the Department of Mathematical Sciences invites you to a colloquium presented by dr Tomoko Kitagawa from the University of Oxford's Mathematical Institute.

Abstract:

The 16th and 17th centuries saw various interactions of culture and knowledge in many parts of the world. As long-distance voyages became routine, mathematics contributed to the early stage of globalisation, facilitating a synchronisation and synthesis of knowledge. This talk highlights the interactions and transmission of ideas not only from Europe to East Asia but from East Asia to Europe (via South Africa).
