We are on the brink of the fourth industrial revolution, with artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, 3-D printing, precision medicine and quantum computing holding the promise of radical changes to all aspects of society.

At the core of these advances are the rapidly developing fields of data science and computational thinking (DS&CT).

While data storage facilities and computational resources have traditionally been more abundant in the global North, it is the combination of necessity, scarcity, demographic profile and entrepreneurial spirit that places Africa in the unique position to shape the next revolution by prioritising solutions that maximise societal impact.

The Stellenbosch University's new School for D&CT takes a non-conventional, trans-faculty approach to teaching and research in DS&CT, which we believe will give rise to a new generation of problem-solvers in and for Africa. Through the facilitation of new undergraduate programmes, short courses at Winter and Summer Schools, collaborations with industry partners and interdisciplinary postgraduate research programmes, the School aims to unite domain experts from all faculties at the intersection of the science and applications of DS&CT.

Dr Wim Delva trained as a medical doctor and obtained a PhD degree at Ghent University in Belgium. Since the beginning of 2019 he is the acting director for the Stellenbosch University School for Data Science and Computational Thinking. His current research centres around the development and validation of a new method for calibrating individual-based models to summarised data.
