Stellenbosch University's Development and Alumni Relations Division warmly invites you to our World of Work Week — our annual career development event for young alumni. World of Work Week is a “town-hall" styled career discourse event where young alumni can ask alumni experts and industry pioneers questions, share their opinions, and challenge the current trajectory of the world of work.

Ultimately, this discourse aims to assist you in assessing your current career path and influence you to build a path for success.

For this week-long series, we have chosen four exciting topics.

Setting the scene to the world of work in South Africa
Entering the world of work can be very daunting, particularly when looking at the current graduate unemployment statistics. As a young graduate you might be wondering what the current state of vis-à-vis young graduates is:

  • Starting salaries for interns and young graduates - what can you expect?
  • The stats available on recruitment and the selection process for positions for which young graduates are ideally placed
  • Who are the employers of choice in SA and why?
  • The growth in self-employment among young graduates

In this discussion, we will unpack these questions relating to the employment of graduates in South Africa today.

Date: Monday, 1 August 2022
Time: 18:00 – 19:30

Maximising the impact of educators with limited resources
As young education graduates, there are challenges that may impact our ability to teach and influence pupils. Education systems are often under-resourced, educators are often overworked, and the lack of support structures in this new territory can lead to burnout. This discussion will focus on how to do the most with the limited support that is given to educators – both inside and outside of the classroom curriculum.

Time: 18:00 – 19:30
Where: Online
Speakers: Dr Elzhan Rinquest, Lecturer at the Department of Education Policy Studies, Faculty of Education, in conversation with Lee-Ann Groenewald, Department Head and Visual Arts Teacher at The Children's Art Centre, Dr Abraham de Villiers, Acorn Education's Head of Education and Mkululi Nompumza, Academic Development Coordinator at the Centre for Creative Education
