As the only truly digital commercial scanner, it is considered by many experts to be the best PET/CT system available today. The NII serves researchers from a wide range of biomedical and clinical disciplines, including infectious diseases; neuroscience; oncology; and cardiology.

The Node for Infection Imaging (NII) is a research facility and a core node of the Nuclear Medicine Research Infrastructure Research Initiative (NuMeRI), which forms part of the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap (SARIR). The Node is hosted by the Central Analytical Facilities and is located at Tygerberg Hospital, in Cape Town.
