This one-day short course, presented by the Communication Lab of the Language Centre, offers an introduction to the communication knowledge and skills that professionals need to complete various communication tasks successfully.
If you are looking for guidance and practical tips for business communication, this course is for you. Give yourself an edge by investing a bit of time in honing your business communication skills together with an expert in the field.
Who is the presenter?
Prof Carel Jansen, author and co-author of more than 150 books and articles on professional communication, will present this short course. Prof Jansen is an emeritus professor in the field of Communication and Information Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. What are the course outcomes?
After this course, you will be able to do the following:
- Analyse communication messages using a method known as the four-sides model of communication
- Recognise and critically assess the argumentation in communication messages
- Make your oral presentations even more engaging, using insights and techniques partly inherited from classical rhetoric
- Prepare and structure more effective professional conversations and apply basic techniques for conducting such conversations
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to all participants.

This is a one-day short course from 09:00 to 16:00. It will take place in the Seminar Room of the Language Centre, Kleine Bosch, 44 Banhoek Road, Stellenbosch, on the 6th November 2019.
