Maties Make an Impact during Welcoming Week

Around five thousand newcomers are welcomed at Stellenbosch University (SU) every year.  The annual tradition of exposing these newcomers to a well-rounded student life kicks off during welcoming week.  A social impact morning is part of the welcoming programme and provides an opportunity for SU to expose newcomers to out of classroom learning experiences in community contexts.  This year, along with the residences and PSO's, student societies and clusters will also be participating. Although some of the activities are once-off outreach endeavours, others will follow through by spending up to 20 weeks volunteering at the respective organisations in the communities in and around Stellenbosch and Tygerberg.

On 01 February 2018, from 09:00 to 12:00, some of the students from residences will be moving off campus to support various initiatives in local communities.  These residences include such as Huis ten Bosch who will be supporting Ark Educare Centre where newcomers will interact with learners through different activities. Other residences stay on campus and take initiative in making sandwiches and collecting stationery.

Even though the Medicine and Health Sciences Campus at Tygerberg has already started with their academic programme, they are also involved in various social impact initiatives. Since Tygerberg is the Medicine and Health Sciences campus, Osler a private student organisation (PSO), is focusing their efforts on improving the environment within Tygerberg hospital.  At the same time, the Hippokrates residence acknowledges the importance of education and will be visiting a primary school. Activities include; a bridge clean-up, the creation of a campus vegetable garden and a visit to the old age home.

The aim of the social impact morning is to introduce new students to community development initiatives and to build on the culture of enhancing social impact at SU. Through these initiatives, students have an opportunity to contribute in a broad sense to the SU Social Impact themes namely: Education for All; Employment & Inclusive Economic Development; Environment & Sustainability; Food Security & Health; Resources & Infrastructure; Safety, Security & Good Governance; and Social & Gender Justice. There are initiatives which run all year long that are always in need of more volunteers. The events of February 1st will hopefully inspire many more Maties to get involved and make a difference.
