The central responsibility areas of the CTL are:

  • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference (SoTL) :​​
    This is an annual in-house Teaching and Learning conference, including a full day of pre-conference Teaching and Learning workshops, co-ordinated by the CTL.

  • Student feedback system
    This is a centrally-administered system to evaluate aspects of teaching and learning at the module and programme level, co-ordinated by the CTL. The CTL remains responsible for the administration of this system, maintenance of the student feedback questionnaires, processing and storage of the data, as well as the compilation and distribution of student feedback reports to faculties.  

  • Fund for Innovation and Research in Learning and Teaching (FIRLT):
    This is a centrally administered system, co-ordinated by the CTL, to provide seed funding for small-scale classroom-based research and innovation. 

  • Annual writing retreats:
    The CTL facilitates two writing retreats per annum, one in May and one in November. The writing retreats serve two purposes; they provide a space for previous FIRLT recipients to turn their completed research projects into publishable research papers and for potential FIRLT recipients to complete research proposals. 

  • Fellowship Scheme:
    The Fellowship scheme provides the opportunity for excellent teachers and scholars of teaching and learning to spend more consistent periods of time, with various forms of support, to focus on aspects of renewal, exploration and dissemination of good practice within Departments and Faculties. 

  • Auxins:
    This is a programme of monthly lunchtime sessions aimed at creating opportunities for academics to examine and deepen their knowledge about topics of own interest in the arena of teaching and learning at SU. 

  • CHEC regional short courses:
    This is a collaborative programme involving all the universities in the region and co-facilitated and in some cases convened by CTL staff members. This programme is open to all SU staff. 

  • Peer-to-Peer Facilitation of Learning Short Course (Tutorship):​
    ​This is an institutional standardised training short course that can be accessed by all peer facilitators who have been formally appointed by faculties across the university. This course may be used to supplement any training that already exists in faculties or may be used to formally train peer facilitators for faculties. This is a fully online training short course. The course is registered and approved as a co-curriculum offering at SU. 

  • Post Graduate Diploma (Higher Education – Teaching and Learning): 
    This is a diploma programme open to all SU staff wishing to further their studies in the area of higher education teaching and learning. It is collaboratively facilitated regionally, and the CTL convenes one of the modules. 

  • Institutional policy development and interpretation in relation to teaching and learning: 
    The CTL plays a core role in the development and interpretation of all SU policies that relate to Teaching and Learning. Towards this end the CTL also convenes and participates in a number of institutional committees as well as task teams. 

  • Faculty-based work of advisors:
    The nature of the service that each advisor provides to faculties, differs from one faculty to another, and is negotiated in consultation with the deputy dean T&L (or equivalent) in each faculty. One point of commonality across this faculty-based work, however, is the establishing of T&L hubs in faculties. The faculty T&L hub is an important mechanism to promote good teaching and to create a critical mass of academics with a particular focus on the issue of T&L.  It has a central focus on teaching that generates interest, energy, guidance and leadership. The T&L hub takes on various forms, depending on the context of the particular faculty. The T&L hubs initiate, coordinate and promote regular activities that foster interest and faculty development in scholarly teaching.

  • Inkqubo yeengxelo zabafundi:

  • INgxowa-mali yoBuchule noPhando ekuFundeni nasekuFundiseni (FIRLT):

  • Iindawo zokubhala zarhoqo ngonyaka:
    I-CTL iququzelela iindawo zokubhala kabini ngonyaka, enye ibakho ngenyanga kaCanzibe ize enye ibekho ngeyeNkanga. Ezi ndawo zokubhala zisebenza imibandela emibini; zibonelela ngesithuba sokuba abo babekhe bafumana i-FIRLT ngaphambili bajike iiprojekthi zabo zophando ezigqityiweyo ukuze zibe ziimpepha zophando ezinokupapasheka nokuze abo basenako ukuba ngabafumani be-FIRLT bagqibezele iziphakamiso zabo zophando. 

  • INkqubo yobuDlelwane:

  • I-okzini:
    Le yinkqubo yeeseshoni zangexesha lesidlo sasemini yarhoqo ngenyanga nekunjongo yayo ikukudala amathuba okuba abahlohli nabafundi bahlole ze benze nzulu ngakumbi ulwazi lwabo malunga nemixholo enika umdla kubo kwimeko yokufundisa nokufunda e-SU. 

  • Izifundo ezifutshane ze-CHEC kwimimandla:
    Le yinkqubo engentsebenziswano nebandakanya zonke iiyunivesithi ezikulo mmandla kwaye iququzelelwa ngokubambisana ize kwezinye iimeko ilawulwe ngamalungu abasebenzi be-CTL. Le nkqubo ivulelekile kubo bonke abafundi base-SU.

  • UQuquzelelo ngooNtangandini lokuFundwa kweZifundo eziFutshane (ukuTyhutharisha):
    Esi sisifundo soqeqesho esifutshane seziko esingummiselo nekunokufikelela kuso bonke abaququqzeleli boontangandini abathe batyunjwa ngokusesikweni ziifakhalthi kwiyunivesithi jikelele. Esi sifundo singasetyenziswa ukuncedisana naluphi na uqeqesho esele lukhona kwiifakhalthi okanye singasetyenziselwa ukuqeqesha ngokusesikweni abaququzeleli boontangandini kwiifakhalthi. Esi sisifundo soqeqesho esifutshane nesikwi-intanethi ngokupheleleyo. Esi sifundo sibhalisiwe saze saphunyezwa njengesifundo esibonelelwa kunye nekharityhulam e-SU. 

  • IDiploma yaseMva kokuba siSithwala-ndwe (iMfundo ePhakamileyo – ukuFundisa nokuFunda):
    Le yinkqubo yediploma evuleleke kubo bonke abasebenzi base-SU abanqwenela ukuqhubela phambili izifundo zabo kummandla wokufundisa nokufunda kwimfundo ephakamileyo. Iququzelelwa ngokubambisana kulo mmandla, kwaye i-CTL yiyo elawula enye yezi modyuli.

  • Uphuhliso lomgaqo-nkqubo weziko nohlanganiso ngokujoliswe ekufundiseni nasekufundeni:
    I-CTL idlala indima engundoqo kuphuhliso notoliko lwayo yonke imigaqo-nkqubo yase-SU ephathelene nokuFunda nokuFundisa. Ngale ndlela i-CTL ikwalawula ize ithathe inxaxheba kwiqela leekomiti zeziko kwakunye namaqela emisebenzi. 

  • IiProjekthi zoPhando:
    I-CTL iyabandakanyeka kwiqela leeprojekthi zophando eziphathelene nokufunda nokufundisa kwimfundo ephakamileyo.   • Umsebenzi wabacebisi osekelwe kwiifakhalthi:
    Ubunjani benkonzo umcebisi ngamnye abonelela ngayo kwiifakhalthi, buyahluka kwifakhalthi nganye, kwaye buxoxwa ngokubonisana nosekela-mphathi T&L (okanye okwinqanaba elilingana nelakhe) kwifakhalthi nganye. Indawo ofana ngayo lo msebenzi usekelwe kwiifakhalthi uwonke, noko kunjalo, kukumiselwa kweehabhu ze-T&L kwiifakhalthi. Ihabhu yefakhalthi ye-T&L yindlela ebalulekileyo yokuphakamisa ukufundisa okulungileyo nokudala intlaninge yezifundiswa ezigxile ngokukodwa kumba we-T&L. Inengqwalasela engundoqo ekufundiseni neqokelela umdla, Amandla, isikhokelo nobunkokheli. Die sentrale verantwoordelikheidsareas van SOL is die volgende:

  • Studenteterugvoerstelsel:
    Hierdie sentraal-geadministreerde stelsel om aspekte van onderrig en leer op die module- en programvlak te evalueer, word deur SOL gekoördineer. SOL bly verantwoordelik vir die administrasie van hierdie stelsel, die byhou van die studenteterugvoervraelyste, die verwerking en berging van die data, en die samestelling en verspreiding van studenteterugvoerverslae aan fakulteite.
     
  • Fonds vir Innovasie en Navorsing in Leer en Onderrig (FINLO):
    Hierdie sentraal-geadministreerde stelsel, wat deur SOL gekoördineer word, het ten doel om saadgeld vir kleinskaalse klaskamergebaseerde navorsing en innovasie beskikbaar te stel.
     
  • Jaarlikse skryfgeleenthede:
    SOL fasiliteer twee skryfgeleenthede per jaar, een in Mei en een in November. Die skryfgeleenthede het twee doelwitte: hulle bied 'n ruimte vir voormalige FINLO-ontvangers om hulle voltooide navorsingsprojekte in publiseerbare navorsingsreferate te omskep en vir potensiële FINLO-ontvangers om navorsingsvoorstelle te voltooi.
     
  • Onderriggenootskapskema:
    Die Onderriggenootskapskema bied die geleentheid vir uitnemende dosente en akademici van onderrig en leer om vir meer vaste tydperke, met verskeie vorme van ondersteuning, op aspekte van hernuwing, ondersoek en verspreiding van goeie praktyk in Departemente en Fakulteite te kan fokus.
     
  • Auxins:
    Dit is 'n program van maandelikse middagetesessies gemik op die skepping van geleenthede vir akademici om hulle kennis oor onderwerpe in die arena van onderrig en leer aan die US, waarin hulle self belangstel, te ondersoek en te verdiep.

  • Kortkursus in Eweknie-leerfasilitering (Tuto​rskap):​
    Hierdie is ʼn institusionele gestandaardiseerde opleidingskortkursus vir alle eweknie-fasiliteerders wat formeel deur fakulteite in die universiteit aangestel is. Hierdie kursus kan gebruik word om enige bestaande opleiding in fakulteite aan te vul, of om eweknie-fasiliteerders vir fakulteite formeel op te lei. Die kortkursus vind ten volle aanlyn plaas. Die kursus is as ʼn kokurrikulum-aanbieding by die US geregistreer en goedgekeur​.​ 

  • CHEC-kortkursusse in die Wes-Kaap:
    Dit is 'n samewerkingsprogram waarby al die universiteite in die streek betrokke is, met mede-fasilitering en in sommige gevalle sameroeping deur SOL-personeellede. Hierdie program is oop vir alle US-personeel.

  • Nagraadse Diploma in Hoër Onderwys in Onderrig en Leer:
    Hierdie diplomaprogram is oop vir alle US-personeel wat graag hulle studies op die gebied van hoëronderwysonderrig en -leer wil uitbou. Dit word gesamentlik streeksgewys gefasiliteer, en SOL is die sameroeper vir een van die modules.
     
  • Institusionele beleidsontwikkeling en -interpretasie met betrekking tot onderrig en leer: 
    SOL speel 'n kernrol in die ontwikkeling en interpretasie van alle US-beleide wat op Onderrig en Leer betrekking het. In hierdie verband, is SOL dan ook 'n sameroeper en deelnemer in verskeie institusionele komitees, asook in taakspanne. 
  • Fakulteit-gebaseerde werk van adviseurs: 
    Die aard van die diens wat elke adviseur aan fakulteite bied, verskil van fakulteit tot fakulteit, en word vasgestel in konsultasie met die Visedekaan O&L (of die ekwivalent van hierdie persoon) in elke fakulteit. Een punt wat al die fakulteitgebaseerde werk wel in gemeen het, is die vestiging van O&L-spilpunte (hubs) in fakulteite. Die fakulteit se O&L-spilpunt is 'n belangrike meganisme om goeie onderrig te bevorder en 'n kritieke massa van akademici met 'n spesifieke fokus op die kwessie van O&L op te bou. Die spilpunte het 'n sentrale fokus op onderrig wat belangstelling, energie, rigtinggewing en leierskap genereer. Die O&L-spilpunt kan verskillende vorme aanneem, afhangende van die konteks van die spesifieke fakulteit. Die O&L-spilpunte inisieer, koördineer en bevorder gereelde aktiwiteite wat belangstelling en fakulteitsontwikkeling in akademiese onderrig aankweek.
