Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) refer to organism(s) with genetic material that has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally (i.e., through mating and/or natural recombination). Bacterial strains used as hosts of gene cloning (recombinant DNA work) are included.

Requirements according to the GMO Act (Act 15 of 1997), Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD):

  • Registration of facilities for GMO use. The facility is classified according to the containment level (1 to 4)
    • Lab registration is valid for 3 years
  • Apply for a permit for any of the following purposes involving GMOs:
    • Contained use, including Containment Level 3 and 4 research facilities.
      • See Regulation 2(2) for exempting academic or research facilities (Containment Level 2 or lower) and GMO events that have obtained general/conditional general release or commodity clearance authorisations
    • Trial releases
    • Commercial/general releases
    • Commodity imports and exports
    • Imports and exports of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) for contained use or general releases
