Undergraduate offering
The MBChB programme of the University consists of theoretical modules (Organ/System-based) and clinical rotations (specialty-based). The Division has input into numerous theoretical modules, most particularly the Digestive System, which is presented in the first semester of MBChB II. Students in their 3rd to 6th year of MBChB training spend a total of 13 weeks rotating through the various clinical Units of this Division.
Postgraduate offering
The Division offers surgical specialty training towards the degree MMed(Surg) of the University of Stellenbosch. Acceptance of postgraduate students for this degree is dependent on the applicant being appointed in a Registrar post at Tygerberg Hospital or Paarl Hospital, Karl Bremer Hospital or Worcester Hospital.
Supernumerary
The Division also accepts supernumerary (non-salaried) postgraduate trainees if the applicant complies with the necessary application criteria. Training consists of a 1 year probationary Medical Officer position, and only if successfully completed, followed by 5 years as a Supernumerary Registrar (= 6 years).

Fellowships
The Division offers 2-year subspecialty fellowship training in the fields of Surgical Gastroenterology (Colorectal or HPB), Vascular Surgery and Trauma Surgery.
