DISCRIMINATION AND HARASSMENT
Stellenbosch University has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination or harassment. Discrimination may include but is not limited to racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, xenophobia or ableism. Sexual harassment is defined as a form of discrimination on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation or sexuality; it is unwanted and may be experienced as an expression of power, authority or control of a sexual nature; it creates a hostile environment that prevents those concerned from learning or working to capacity.
Anyone (student or staff member) can report unfair discrimination and harassment incidents on the newly launched online case management reporting platform spearhead by the Equality Unit within the Centre for Student Counselling and Development.
This web-based platform allows complainants to report incidents, transgressions and complaints effortlessly, confidentially and safely. The platform assists in:
• providing a clear picture of potential risks;
• integrating existing data and information into a centralised database;
• creating focused awareness and understanding of matters reported; and
• enabling complainants to make informed decisions and access support services.
Staff and students can still report incidents through the Unit's walk-in service or via
unfair@sun.ac.za but are encouraged to make use of the web-based platform.
The Equality Unit's services are rendered and complaint mechanisms provided in accordance with Stellenbosch University's Policy on Unfair Discrimination and Harassment and applicable national legislation.
