Our Story
From our humble beginnings in 1925 to becoming a leading institution in Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) education and research, our faculty has consistently strived to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and influence the complexities of the economy. Our graduates have gone on to make remarkable contributions across various sectors, driving economic growth, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting ethical business practices.
The theme of our centenary, "transforming the economy and society," encapsulates our vision for the future. As we reflect on our achievements, we are equally focused on the challenges that lie ahead. In an era marked by economic shifts, technological advancements, and social movements it is imperative that we continue to adapt and innovate. Our faculty is dedicated to fostering a culture of critical thinking and collaboration that empowers students to become leaders who drive positive change in the economy and society in South Africa and beyond.
Our mission is to develop ethical, engaged, innovative leaders who pursue economic and societal transformation.
We achieve this through our commitment to inclusivity, engaged learning, impactful research and meaningful societal partnerships.

Our student experience
As a residential university, we continue to serve students with classroom-based face-to-face teaching and learning, engaging them as co-creators of knowledge. But we are also moving with the times to extend our learning spaces and crack open new knowledge markets.
Broad Wi-Fi coverage, livestreaming, our Telematic Services and the SUNLearn mobile app help us push the boundaries of our teaching. Our growing hybrid-learning offering and new edX StellenboscX online course portfolio offer even more opportunities to take part in our programmes.
According to the Department of Higher Education and Training’s official figures, SU remains among South Africa’s most research-intensive universities, both per capita and in terms of total research output. Our faculty has 44 National Research Foundation-rated researchers including 1 A-rated researcher and 9 B-rated researchers. We have 1 SARCHi Chair, 1 UNESCO Chair, and 1 Millenium Trust Chair. And 240 candidates enrolled for a PhD.
Financial support remains one of the most pressing needs for students. This fund will provide essential financial assistance through both top-up and/or full scholarships, ensuring that the brightest minds, regardless of financial background, can access the world-class education our faculty offers.
As a donor, you will have a direct and lasting impact, empowering the next generation of leaders and innovators. Become a founding donor and help build a sustainable future for EMS students.
The #Move4Food campaign raises awareness, reduces stigma around hunger, and brings the university community together to support students in need. Your contribution to #Move4Food will help students focus on their academic success without worrying about food security.
