SU-CLaST is a new interdisciplinary research centre of the Faculties of Arts and Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. It is the result of active collaboration in the field of language and speech processing over a period of more than twenty years between the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of African Languages at the University of Stellenbosch. SU-CLaST commenced with its activities in this new format in January 2005 and currently consists of two groups:

  • The DSP Group
The Digital Signal Processing group forms part of the Engineering Department at the University of Stellenbosch. The group focuses on speech recognition, language recognition and pattern recognition.

  • The Phonetics Lab
The Phonetics Lab is linked to the Department of African Languages. The development of annotated text and speech corpora forms part of the activities of the laboratory. The current focus is on SA English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and Southern Sotho, with work also being done in a West African language such as Civili.

SU-ClaST is active in the field of Human Language Technologies (HLT) and with a focus on the African context it embarks on basic and applied research up to proto-type level. This was also the case with its predecessor (RUEPUS) that developed the multilingual AST system.
