Like the rest of the country, Stellenbosch University and its campuses are affected by load shedding and should therefore be prepared for any disruption in the power supply.

Fortunately, most academic buildings and research facilities have emergency power, while some buildings have partial emergency power and other critical areas have been fitted with a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) with a back-up system lasting approximately two hours.

Information on these buildings and the applicable back-up power supply, as well as the Eskom load shedding schedules, will be updated by Facilities Management as Eskom provides new information. However, bear in mind that unexpected outages may occur at any time or that the power supply may not be interrupted as indicated in a load-shedding schedule if the electricity grid is not under pressure. Also consult: www.loadshedding.eskom.co.za.

These measures have been taken on institutional level, but we request the cooperation of all staff and students to evaluate the potential impact of power outages on work and study times and to take special measures as required, to minimise the impact of load shedding.

  • Regularly charge your mobile devices. This will reduce frustration during load shedding as you will be able to continue working.
  • All exits with card access have battery back-up systems and no difficulty entering or leaving buildings during the estimated two to three hour power outages are foreseen. If outages should last significantly longer during Eskom emergencies these batteries may need to be checked, especially over weekends. These back-up systems also need routine maintenance. The Safety Committees in all buildings should ensure that these systems are tested regularly.
  •  Load-shedding after dark imposes even more pressure on our Campus Security staff. We can assist them with our vigilance and preparedness by carrying portable lights with us at all times and by assisting colleagues.
  •  Ensure that electric appliances that may have been switched on just before an outage, is switched off before you leave the office.
  • When arranging events which are highly dependent on power supply, especially in the evenings, organisers should consult the load shedding schedule before determining dates and preferably also make back-up arrangements. If generators are a necessity the financial impact should be taken into consideration.
  • For security reasons staff and students may be requested to provide proof of identity. Please ensure that you have your staff/student identification card on you at all times.
