The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) unit at Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape houses 300, 400 and 600Mhz Agilent
NMR spectrometers and a 500MHz Solid State NMR spectrometer with a
variety of probes and experiments available for almost any application.
The unit also has a Circular Dichroism-Fluorescence
Spectro-polarimeter with high resolution/sensitivity.
CD Spectrometer
CD/Absorbance/fluorescence/FDCD
capabilities including temperature control
(single and multi cells), a 4-syringe low
volume/short optical path stop flow unit for fast kinetics and have a
multi-detection capability.
Equipment
300 MHz and 400 MHz NMR Spectrometers (Liquids Only)
Both of these spectrometers are primarily open access instruments
for internal users.
They can run nuclei in the 15N to 31P frequency
range and a wide range of 1 and 2D experiments and have a good variable
temperature range (-100 oC to +150 oC) .
Internal users can enquire at the NMR laboratory
about applying for training on these instrument.
500 MHz NMR Spectrometer (Solid State Only)
This instrument has a wide bore magnet and is dedicated for
solid state NMR spectroscopy. The probes have a frequency range of 15N
to 31P and the following temperature and spinning capabilities:
-
6mm HX MAS probe: VT range -150 to +250 deg C; spinning range 1kHz to 9kHz
-
4mm HX MAS probe: VT range -150 to +250 deg C; spinning range 1kHz to 18kHz
-
3.2mm HX MAS probe: VT range -100 to +100 deg C; spinning range 1kHz to 25kHz
600 MHz NMR Spectrometer (Liquids Only)
This instrument is equipped with a wide variety of probes and
can access nuclei in the 103Rh-31P frequency range.
Most 1D, 2D and 3D (H,C,N only) NMR experiments
can be carried out on this instrument. Limited variable temperature
experiments are possible but are dependent on the probe used.
Note to External Academic Users:
If your University does have its own NMR
spectrometer but you would like to submit samples for experiments on the
600MHz please ensure that:
-
The NMR laboratory staff at your University agree that this is necessary.
- A 1H spectrum has been run on the instrument at your University to ensure the purity of the sample.
This policy is in place to ensure continued
good relations with the NMR staff of the various Universities.
