PI: Dr Monique J. Williams
Monique completed a PhD. in Medical Microbiology at the University of Cape Town in 2007, and subsequently joined Prof Valerie Mizrahi's laboratory at University of the Witwatersrand as a post-doctoral fellow. During this time she received extensive training in molecular methods for mycobacteria, including those required to make deletion mutants in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and applied these techniques to study molybdopterin cofactor (MoCo) biosynthesis in mycobacteria. In 2012 she was awarded a Fogarty International Scholarship to spend 6 months in the Laboratory of Prof. Gilla Kaplan at the Public Health Research Institute (University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey), USA, where she gained experience in studying the physiology of M. tuberculosis using the mouse model and in vitro macrophage model of infection. She was recently awarded an NRF Research Career Award to lead a project investigating iron-sulphur cluster biogenesis in mycobacteria.
