Subcommittee A Funding Opportunities

Special Support Scheme for Research (SOS Funds)

Subcommittee A pays annual awards for publication units (journal articles and books) that qualify for a subsidy from the Department of Higher Education and Training. The lists of accredited journals are available here: Accredited Journals

The amount awarded is determined annually and paid into the respective central research accounts of the qualifying department/centre/division/identified group. These funds are made available to the researchers who earned publication credit units.

  1. These funds are granted automatically, though with a lag of at least one year.

  2. There is no application process.​

Funding in Support of the Doctoral Studies of SU Staff

Full time permanent staff, registered for their doctoral degrees, can apply for project funding of R25 000.

  3. Closing date is typically January.

Funding for the Research of Newly Appointed S​taff

Newly appointed full time permanent staff can apply for Subcommittee A research funds at any time during the year up to August during their first year of appointment. The funding is limited to R50 000.

3.3     Applications can be made throughout the year

4        Post-doctoral fellowships​

​​​Post-doctoral fellowships of R140 000 per annum are made available to academic hosts. The SU host has to make an own contribution of R20 000 per post-doc grant.

5.        Capacity-building

An amount of R25 000 per year is allocated to NRF Thuthuka applicants.​

 

6.   Individual Research Projects (IRP)

Individual research projects involve by staff members do not necessarily involve collaboration with other researchers. The funding for such projects is limited to R50 000 and one year.

6.2        The closing date is typically November.

7.        Collaborative Research Programmes (CRP)​

Collaborative research programmes involve the collaboration of researchers across traditional departmental, faculty and institutional boundaries. The funding for such programmes is limited to R100 000 per annum, for a maximum of two years.
