
Gouws is a Professor in Afrikaans
linguistics in the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch. His research
focuses on metalexicography and dictionary research. He has held
appointments as Honorary Research Fellow and Visiting Professor at the
universities of Exeter, Heidelberg and Aarhus. He is an editor of two of
the leading international journals in the field of lexicography,
Lexikos and
Lexicographica, and of the book series
Lexicographica Series Maior.
Gouws is the recipient of various grants, awards and prizes for his
research. He is a team member of a number of research projects with
dictionary structures, lexicographic functions and electronic
dictionaries as focus areas. He complements his research in theoretical
lexicography with active participation in the lexicographic practice as
editor/co-editor of various dictionaries including the well-known
Afrikaans dictionary HAT, the international
Wörterbuch zur Lexikographie und Wörterbuchforschung/Dictionary of lexicography and dictionary research and ANNA, the recently published innovative Dutch-Afrikaans dictionary.
