Visser is a senior lecturer in the History Department. In 2001 he obtained his PhD at Stellenbosch University. His research expertise is South African labour and trade union history. Recently he has also embarked on a research project on the history of water in the Western Cape. To date he has contributed eight chapters to book publications and five review articles and has published 22 articles in refereed journals. An article on South African pro-strike publications was published in the International Review of Social History (Vol. 49, 3 December 2004). His research project on the history of the South African Mine Workers' Union, Van MWU tot Solidariteit. Die Geskiedenis van die Mynwerkersunie, 1902-2002 was published in 2008. He is a member of the history committee of the South African Academy for Arts and Science and also of the South African Society for History Teachers. Currently he is a sub-editor of the history journal Historia and was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Innsbruck in Austria in 2009 and 2011.
