Admission
requirements
For admission into the DPhil programme in
Psychology a masters degree in Psychology, or an equivalent qualification
acceptable to the University, is required. In addition, admission into the
programme depends on an approved research
proposal.
Programme
structure and contents
The doctoral programme in psychology,
which requires a minimum of two years of study, focuses on the broadening of
knowledge in a specific area of Psychology, the development of advanced research
skills, and on generating new knowledge in that particular field of
Psychology.
The programme (240 credits)
entails the development of a research proposal, execution of the research and
reporting the study in a dissertation, under supervision of a promoter. It is
preferable that the study, of which the topic is determined in consultation with
the promoter, forms part of an existing departmental research project and, where
possible, focuses on a psychosocial problem within the South African context.
The dissertation may be
written in Afrikaans or English. On completion of the dissertation and in
consultation with the promoter, students are required to prepare one or more
papers for publication based on their research.
Assessment
The dissertation is examined
according to the University's regulations for the examination of doctoral
dissertations as stipulated in the section on advanced degrees in Part 1 of the
Prospectus.
