Master's degree in Political Science (by course work and thesis)

 Programme structure

This one-year programme involves the completion of course work (3 modules) and the writing up of independent research into a thesis of approximately 30 000 - 40 000 words in length. The thesis must ideally be related to one of the course work areas of specialisation. The programme has a practical skills component which enables the candidate to specialise in the field of political economic risk analysis, policy analysis and conflict analysis.

Admission requirements

An Honours degree in Political Science or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Senate with an average of 65%.

 Master's degree in Political Science (by thesis only)

 Programme structure

This one-year research programme involves the completion of independent research and the writing up of the results into a thesis. The programme can be followed full-time or part- time.  The candidate does not have to reside in Stellenbosch, but regular contact and consulations with the supervisor is essential.

Admission requirements

An Honours degree in Political Science or an equivalent qualification as approved by the Senate with an average of 65%.

The Chair of the Department of Political Science has the discretion to prescribe a supplementary programme of study for a prospective student.

Thesis

The thesis topic is selected in consultation with the  departmental chair and should ideally be related to the research interests of members of staff. The thesis should be approximatly 40 000 -60 000 words in length.

All theses are examined by an internal and external examiner.

 Master's degree in International Studies (by course work and thesis)

 Programme structure

This one-year programme involves the completion of course work (3 modules) and the writing up of independent research into a thesis of approximately 30 000-40 000 words in length. The thesis must ideally be related to one of the course work areas of specialisation. The programme has a practical skills component which enables the candidate to specialise in the field of foreign policy analysis, conflict mediation and peace-making in Africa, and global governance.

Admission requirements

An Honours degree or equivalent qualification in Political Science or a related subject, as approved by the Senate. An average pass mark of 65% in the final year of the degree or diploma preceding registration is a minimum requirement.
