Community-Based Research (CBR) is a collaborative research approach between the university and community when academics and students work with community-based organisations to define the research questions and develop appropriate strategies to address those questions. In this research approach, community members are active participants and
collaborators in the research process and are empowered to develop their own work through the participatory research
process. CBR emerged in response to the criticism that universities are insufficiently responsive to the needs of communities. The goal of CBR is to initiate positive social change and social action to achieve social justice through research evidence.
