Private Travel: COVID-19 update

Staff and students of Stellenbosch University (SU) who plan to travel locally and internationally in their private capacity, are urged to make informed decisions regarding their movements and the impact of COVID-19.

While the University has placed a temporary ban on staff and students travelling to and from China, South Korea, Italy and Iran, it cannot prohibit staff and students from traveling in their private capacity.

To limit the risk of the spread of the COVID-19, staff and students who do contract COVID-19 due to private travel, will not be allowed to return to work, class or a residence until they are fit to do so.

Staff and students who do opt for private travel during this period are also urged to obtain the relevant information from their travel insurance company to ascertain if there is coverage in place for any incidents that are related to the impact of COVID-19.

A contingency committee has been constituted consisting of various experts including staff from the Centre for Infectious Diseases (CID) and the Division of Medical Virology at the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (SACEMA), the SU Campus Health Service and others. The contingency committee meets weekly and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The SU Management calls on the University community to please stay informed by reading regular posts that will be communicated on social media and the official website of the University.
