Library & Information Service celebrates Library Week with Highlights 2019

The Library and Information Service, Stellenbosch University, together with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), is celebrating South African Library Week (SALW) between 18 and 24 March 2019. The theme of SALW is Collaborate @ your library.

The Library and Information Service celebrates SALW by highlighting some of the exciting events and news of 2019.

A renovated Stellenbosch University Bellville Park Campus Library (USBL)
One of the upgrade initiatives of the Library was the completion of the Stellenbosch University Bellville Park Campus Library (USBL) in 2018. This upgrade gives the USBL a more spacious, brighter and welcoming look. It includes new carpets, signage, lighting, additional electric plug points, a redesigned reception/information desk, two offices for the faculty librarians and a new staff room. All the new bookshelves are mobile to provide for flexible use of the available space. There are various comfortable seating options and study pods to facilitate research, study and collaborative activities on the Bellville Park Campus.

Renovation of SU Library's entrance area and ablution facilities
During 2018, the Library worked closely with Facilities Management and the appointed architects to plan and design the refurbishment of the entrance, circulation and security areas, student computer work areas, a collaborative learning space, toilets, as well as a coffee breakaway area. The renovations are planned to start in 2019.

Research Week
This year Library Research Week will be held between 13 and 17 May. The theme is: Be a smart researcher and presentations will focus on the subthemes Be prepared, Be open, Be inspired and Be supported. Be prepared to be inspired at the 2019 Library Research Week. The final programme will be made available soon.

Makerspace
A makerspace provides a collaborative, technologically-focused environment with a 3D scanner, 3D printer, microcontrollers, oscilloscopes, development kits, soldering station and computers - for SU students to invent, create and learn, while sharing. The Makerspace is coming soon to the SU Library.

Stellenbosch University Research Data Repository (SUNRDR)
Stellenbosch University is currently setting up its own institutional research data repository. The Stellenbosch University Research Data Repository (SUNRDR) will be launched sometime during 2019. The SUNRDR will enable SU researchers to share and disseminate their research data in accordance with good research data management practices. This will facilitate the findability, accessibility and reusability of the University's research data.

Open Access Week
Open Access Week is a global event now in its 12th year, promoting Open Access as the new default in scholarship and research. This year it will be celebrated between 21 and 27 October. The Library's programme will be communicated closer to the time.

During SA Library Week, the SU Library has a number of training events scheduled. Book your seat now.
