Welcome to Stellenbosch University
Let the bicycle wheels roll!

During the week of 15 – 19 October you will once again have the chance to pump up your bicycle wheels and cycle to work. This is Stellenbosch’s fourth annual Bike to Work and School campaign.

Become part of a large group of Stellenbosch residents who already cycle to work – either to miss the traffic, for health reasons or to avoid parking problems.

“Stellenbosch University fully supports this initiative. To tell the truth, this underlines the campaign we have been running for years to encourage cycling on campus and in the greater town. Cycling forms part of our greater Transport Initiative, in terms of which we are striving to reduce our carbon

footprint as well as manage parking on campus,” says Dr Barbara Pool, Senior Director: Strategic Initiatives, who has the overarching responsibility for systemic sustainability at SU.

In support of cycling as method of transport, SU was the first South African university to offer bicycles for rent to students and staff. There are nearly 500 maroon Matie Bikes at present. Feel free to contact the Matie Bike Office at fiets_bike@sun.ac.za if you are interested in renting one.

Bike to Work and School has a wide range of activities planned for this week, including morning coffee sessions at bicycle-friendly coffee shops, the making of a special video, a special bicycle map for the town and the Eikestadnuus at half the price if you turn up with your bike at the newspaper’s office in Alexander Street on Thursday morning 18 October. For more activities, visit www.stellenboschfietsry.co.za.

“We at SU are very proud of what we have achieved so far in terms of transport on our campuses. We are also grateful for the support we receive from staff and students in this respect. We are working with the municipality and interested parties in town on an ongoing basis to further refine our plans and initiatives,” says Dr Pool.
