Research Seminar: Learning from failure in doctoral learning by Professor Elke Stracke from the University of Canberra in Australia

How is failure currently represented within the literature? What are the gaps, silences, and tensions? In this seminar we will discuss what can be learned from the experience of failure. Lack of success in initial doctoral examination is hard to admit to or explain, and has not been deeply investigated. Doctoral education systems are in a state of flux, and in this seminar, I seek to explore the learning potentials presented by a better understanding of failure, in order to influence the broader debates about the future of the doctorate in times of uncertainty and crisis. There is a need to develop strategies for successful communication around failure. With this seminar, I continue my journey of breaking the silence around failure in the doctoral context and generating new discussions relevant to doctoral education in the South African context.
