The annual Mohammed Karaan Memorial Lecture, which honours the memory of the late agricultural leader and Stellenbosch University academic, will be held on Wednesday 29 March 2023. The speaker, Dr Uma Lele, is an agricultural economist - as Prof Karaan was. She will received an honorary doctorate from SU the day before the lecture, for her lifelong contribution to the development of the theory and practice around rural development worldwide.

Dr Lele, a former president of the International Association of Agricultural Economists, will talk around the topic of "Food for all: International organizations and the transformation of agriculture", and will share her views around the theme of Africa's developmental challenges.

This Indian agricultural leader worked for the World Bank from 1971 to 2005. Her book, "Food for all: International organizations and the transformation of agriculture," was published recently.

Prof Karaan, a much loved former dean of the SU Faculty of AgriSciences, was a professor in agricultural economics at SU and president of the Maties Rugby Club at the time of his passing in 2021. Among other things, he contributed to South Africa's National Development Plan and played various leadership roles in the country's agricultural sector.
