Topic: Digitization of Healthcare: Adapting to change
Digital technologies including big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming healthcare and research. Innovation in healthcare delivery is occurring across many disciplines including drug discovery, genomics, radiology, surgery, pathology and dermatology. These advances in prevention, diagnostics and treatment are ground-breaking and have the potential to improve clinical decision-making, minimise clinical errors and provide patients with more focused care. The landscape of service delivery in health is transforming. Big data analytics assist in uncovering trends, patterns, and correlations in large amounts of raw data to help make data-informed decisions through statistical analysis techniques. However, innovation in healthcare comes with a wide range of ethical, social and legal challenges that will be explored in this talk.

Keymanthri Moodley is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Centre for Medical Ethics and Law, Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University. The Centre was designated as a Collaborating Centre in Bioethics in 2019 by the World Health Organisation (WHO), one of twelve in the world and the first on the African continent. Keymanthri is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Social Medicine, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, USA. She is a specialist family physician, bioethicist, an NRF rated researcher and a member of ASSAf. To date, she has been awarded grants to the approximate value of R68 million. The Centre has trained 40 mid-
career professionals from 10 African countries in bioethics and currently has 8 PhD trainees. Keymanthri serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of EDCTP. Her most recent NIH funded research project explores ethical, legal and social issues in Data Science Innovation in Africa.
