The oceans continue to rival landward security as the importance of the oceans a communication, stock and flow resource increases. This attractiveness fosters legal and illegal maritime practices with the latter embedded in criminal enterprises and wars that continuously grow in scope and sophistication. This trend compels governments to bring their maritime houses in order. A national maritime security strategy serves as a foundation to securitise national maritime interests and South Africa must keep in step with this imperative. SIGLA is partnering with the Institute for Security Studies and the UNODC to address important aspects of a National Maritime Security Strategy for South Africa. This takes place at a seminar held at STIAS in Stellenbosch on 28 and 29 July 2022 with speakers from South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, India and the UNODC.
