The Topic

From accessing information to actually using it: The development of a Knowledge Skills module for first years

This presentation will take the form of an autoethnographic reflection on the development of a Knowledge Skills module. Key points of reflection include:

  • The need for participatory curriculum design
  • The points of agreement and divergence between academic literacy, information literacy and digital literacy
  • The move from a focus on information-sharing to knowledge-building

Marenet will share reflection on the experience of redesigning a curriculum in the Department of Journalism, to include knowledge skills.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) initiated a large-scale programme renewal project a few years ago. One of the key discussion points of the programme renewal reference group was the need for a reinvigoration of the current compulsory first-year module titled “Information Skills".

The Department of Journalism has taken the lead on redesigning the curriculum for this module, which includes the proposed name change to “Knowledge Skills".
