Judge President Dennis Davis will deliver the inaugural Annual Social Justice Lecture. Davis will speak on the topic “Social Justice and Economic Inclusion: Where To South Africa?"

The annual lecture will aim to raise awareness while advancing scholarship and deepening jurisprudence on social justice. The lecture is part of various activities of the social Justice Chair and Hub aimed at catalysing the ending of poverty and reduction of structural inequality by 2030 in line with the NDP and SDGs.

  • Hosted by Prof Thuli Madonsela, the Law Trust Chair in Social Justice in the Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University, the lecture takes place at 18:30 in the Attie van Wijk Auditorium in the Faculty of Theology, 171 Dorp Street in Stellenbosch on Thursday 20 February.

Says Madonsela on the topic: “Ubuntu, the ancient philosophy underpinning human coexistence in sub-Saharan Africa, says that 'I am because we are; my humanity is tied up with and defined by yours. I let you die at my own peril and preserve your well-being for my own good because together we are stronger against the elements and anything we may face'. It is my considered view that all human coexistence was initially anchored in some form of Ubuntu or sense of humanity. That is how humans were able to preserve themselves."

Social Justice Cafe

The inaugural Annual Social Justice Lecture will be preceded by this year's first Social Justice Café – to be presented by Prof Madonsela. The topic is “The meaning and theories of social Justice".

The talk will take place at 13:00 in Huis Russel Botman House in Marais Street in Stellenbosch.
