​The Department of Music's divisions for Choral Conducting and Music Education are hosting the first Diversity in Music Education Symposium from 13-15 February. The symposium aims to critically explore the diversity found in music education – both locally and internationally. 

The Department of Music is excited to welcome international and local keynote speakers:

  • Prof. Dr. Sheila Woodward (USA – Eastern Washington University)
  • Prof. Dr. Kai Martin (Germany – University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar)
  • Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel (Germany – Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich)
  • Prof. Franz Comploi (Italy – Free University of Bozen-Bolzano)
  • Prof. Alethea de Villiers (SA – Nelson Mandela University)

Presentations by SU lecturers Danell Muller, Ncebakazi Mnukwana, Pamela Kierman, Felicia Lesch and Martin Berger, as well as postgraduate students Carolyn Rossouw, Carl Pilkington and Marissa von Mollendorf also form part of the week's programme.

Topics to be discussed include: “Applying a Social Justice Paradigm to Diversity in Music Education", “Internationalization and the vision of a global music education community", “Tradition renegotiated: Music Education from a German perspective", “Sounds the call to come together: singing diversity and pursuing identity through choral singing", and “Along the path of music diversity: reflections about a music class project in ten stations".
