Everyone knows where to find Stellenbosch, a town of many contradictions nestled in the midst of the Boland mountains. But how many people really know how Stellenbosch thinks, feels and hopes?

As part of Stellenbosch University's (SU) Centenary, the SU Woordfees presents an interactive theatre performance, 100% Stellenbosch. This production will attempt to answer many questions about Stellenbosch and its inhabitants.

The SU Woordfees forms part of the University's Division for Social Impact, and has been held annually in Stellenbosch since 2000. The festival kicks off on Friday 2 March, but 100% Stellenbosch will be staged this coming weekend, 23 to 25 February, at the recently renovated HB Thom Theatre.

The theatre production 100% Stellenbosch is a co-production between the SU Woordfees and Rimini Protokoll, a Berlin-based theatre group that have tackled similar projects in 34 cities around the world – including Berlin, São Paulo, London and Melbourne.

100% Stellenbosch works like this: One hundred people have been chosen who represent 1% of the Stellenbosch population and demography. According to the 2011 census, 51% of Stellenbosch residents are female and 49% male, and therefore 51 of the participants are female and 49 male.

A circular stage representing a pie chart, which will be segmented with lighting, will serve as the production set for the 100 participants.

Questions about a wide variety of issues will be posed and the participants will answer them by choosing the parts of the stage that resonate with their views. A view of the stage will be projected onto a big screen so that audience members are able to both experience and see the changes and revelations represented by the pie chart. This promises to be a fascinating and authentic view of the heart and mind of Stellenbosch.

Every person on the stage will bring with them an object that represents them in some way – something that is important to each of them.

As the show progresses, we will also hear from some of the participants as they share their stories, beliefs and hopes with the audience.

Only three performance of 100% Stellenbosch will be presented in the HB Thom Theatre: on Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 February at 19:30. Tickets are available at Computicket.
