Academic innovation and student support promote student success

Stellenbosch University (SU) is committed to continued academic excellence and social relevance. This world class institution is helping to build a better society through its core functions, -  learning and teaching, research and innovation, and community interaction. Quality learning and teaching at SU make a crucial contribution to the achievement of strategic institutional objectives, including increasing student success; enhancing the University's knowledge-base; broadening the diversity of the staff and student corps; and systemic sustainability. Innovative teaching and learning programmes, as well as effective learning and study opportunities promote student success:  the end goal of the teaching and learning process, and also as an important goal of SU's HOPE Project.

In the centre of responsibility of the Vice-Rector: Learning and Teaching efforts are continuously made to build on academic success and to provide the necessary support to academics and students. Overall, the emphasis in this environment is on learning and teaching management; education policy development; education quality assurance; student enrolment management; student affairs; support to student governance structures; and language management, especially the implementation of multilingualism. Various divisions within this centre of responsibility are working closely with ten faculties to help create a welcoming culture for all students and staff, to ensure all students achieve the same success rate, and to enrich the lecturing experience of lecturers. Technology is being used in an innovative way to increase the effectiveness of learning and teaching.

A wide range of services is offered to students to enhance their in-class (curricular) and out-of-class (co-curricular) experience. Apart from promoting students' personal, academic, social and financial wellness, leadership is also developed. They are encouraged to become involved with the broader community in a number of ways.

Essential psychotherapeutic services, a 24-hour crisis service, development workshops and support groups help students to navigate the many challenges of university life. Support is offered to students with special learning needs (disabilities).

Through focused initiatives Coloured, black and Indian candidates, especially those from educationally disadvantaged schools, are being recruited and prepared for University study. In doing this, a contribution is made towards the realisation of the institutional, transformation and diversity goals of the University.

Consistent monitoring of students' progress through, among others, the tracking system, those who perform under the set standards and who are in need of special support, can be identified early and be given the necessary support.
